GitLab Identity Verification by SMS, Without Your Personal Phone
You can receive a GitLab verification code with OTP Bolt by ordering an Instant OTP for GitLab in one of 197 countries, entering that number in GitLab.com's phone verification step, and reading the SMS code in your OTP Bolt dashboard. Instant OTP is priced from $0.20 per code and fully refunded if no message arrives within 20 minutes. If you want one number that stays on your GitLab account long term, a Dedicated Number starts from $1.95/month.
What GitLab.com does with a phone number
GitLab is a DevSecOps platform: Git hosting, merge requests, issue tracking and CI/CD pipelines in one product. The phone question comes up mainly on GitLab.com, the hosted service.
Free CI/CD minutes on shared runners have long attracted abuse, so GitLab.com may ask new users to verify their identity before they can use certain features. A phone number with an SMS code is one of the verification methods, and depending on the account GitLab may ask for other checks as well.
Two things it is not:
- Not a login factor. GitLab's two-factor authentication works with an authenticator app or a WebAuthn device, not text messages.
- Not a self-managed thing by default. On a GitLab instance your company runs itself, the administrator decides how sign-up works.
So for most developers, the GitLab phone number matters at one moment: the verification step on a fresh GitLab.com account.
Does the country of your number matter for GitLab?
GitLab.com serves developers in nearly every country, and your repositories do not care where your phone was issued. Still, the verification screen sees the dial code, so it is sensible to use a number from where you live or where your team is based.
Instant OTP for GitLab is available in 197 countries on OTP Bolt. Developers commonly pick Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine, Spain, Portugal, India, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Turkey, Argentina, Brazil, Canada or the United States.
The per-code price changes from one country to the next. Your dashboard lists the current GitLab rate for each country before you commit.
Getting through GitLab's SMS check
- Open an account at /signup (email plus a 6-digit code, or Google) and top up the wallet.
- In Instant OTP, choose GitLab and your country.
- Copy the number. In GitLab's verification form, select the country code and paste the local part, leaving out any leading 0.
- Send the code. It lands in your live inbox, normally within a minute or two.
- Enter the digits in GitLab and continue to your projects.
Each order runs for 20 minutes. If GitLab's message does not arrive, or you cancel first, the full price is credited back to your wallet automatically. Delivered codes are final and are not refunded.
Troubleshooting a GitLab SMS code that never arrives
- Number declined. GitLab, like other platforms, can refuse numbers it considers virtual. Cancel the order and the refund applies.
- Doubled dial code. If you select the country and also paste +49 or +81 into the field, the text goes nowhere.
- Rate limits. GitLab limits how often you can request codes. Several fast retries can lock the step for a while.
- Late delivery. While the order is open you can sometimes ask for another SMS on the same number.
If GitLab offers another verification route on your screen, that is a fine fallback too.
Bots, CI jobs and QA: the developer view
One point that saves trouble: automation does not need its own GitLab user. Project access tokens, group access tokens and deploy tokens exist so pipelines and scripts can act without a separate human account, and that keeps you inside GitLab's terms.
Where OTP Bolt helps engineers is in testing your own product. If your app has phone-verified sign-up, your test suite can order a number, poll for the code and cancel through the OTP Bolt REST API with an API key, even from inside a GitLab pipeline. See /developers for the endpoints.
A lasting number for your GitLab account
Most people only need GitLab's SMS check once, which makes Instant OTP the natural choice. A Dedicated Number fits when you want one stable work number that you control for years: for GitLab, for other developer tools and for client calls.
From $1.95/month, it stays yours while it renews, takes repeat verification texts on the same number, places calls from Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari without a SIM, rings in the browser for inbound calls and keeps a call log. You get an email before renewal and can release it any time.
Dedicated Numbers are instant only in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. For other countries, click "Request a country" in the dashboard; the OTP Bolt team confirms availability, price and whether an address or ID check is needed before activation, and how long it takes depends on the country.
Payment, and using GitLab fairly
OTP Bolt is prepaid: a USD wallet funded by card through Stripe checkout or by USDT or USDC. The first top-up unlocks ordering and exact prices, and PDF invoices are emailed. The pricing page has the overview.
GitLab's verification exists to stop people farming free compute. Keep to one account per real person, follow GitLab's terms, and never use extra numbers to stack free-tier allowances. OTP Bolt is not affiliated with GitLab, which is a trademark of its owner.

Questions people ask
Why is GitLab asking me to verify my phone number?
GitLab.com may ask new users to confirm their identity before using some features, mostly to curb abuse of free CI/CD resources.
Can I use a virtual number for GitLab verification?
Often yes, but GitLab can decline some virtual numbers. If no code comes within 20 minutes, the Instant OTP price goes back to your wallet.
Does GitLab send 2FA codes by SMS?
No. GitLab two-factor authentication uses an authenticator app or a WebAuthn device, so SMS is mainly part of the sign-up verification.
Do I need phone verification on a self-managed GitLab server?
That depends on how your administrator configures sign-up. The SMS check described here is a GitLab.com matter.
Can my CI pipeline get its own GitLab account with an OTP Bolt number?
Use project or group access tokens instead. Automation does not need a separate user account.
What does a GitLab verification code cost on OTP Bolt?
Instant OTP starts from $0.20 per code; you see the exact GitLab price per country after your first top-up.
I'm a developer in Poland. Can I get a permanent Polish number?
You can request one from the dashboard. The team checks availability, price and any address or ID requirement before activating it.
